United Kingdom: what to see and when to go

Β· Captain Cheap

The United Kingdom is easy to think you already know before you arrive, filtered through television, films and second-hand impressions. What visitors from the Balkans often find is a country far more varied than the London-centred image suggests, where a two-hour train ride changes the accent, the landscape and sometimes the language on the road signs. It is four nations sharing one island group, and treating it as a single uniform place is the first mistake.

What it's actually like

The weather deserves its reputation, but not in the way people fear. It rarely gets bitterly cold or punishingly hot; instead it is changeable, often grey, and prone to drizzle that comes and goes within an hour. Bring layers and something waterproof rather than a heavy coat. Coming from the warmth and openness of Balkan social life, some visitors read British reserve as coldness. It isn't. People queue patiently, apologise reflexively and keep a certain distance, but ask for directions and you'll usually get genuine, slightly over-thorough help.

The country is also more expensive than much of the continent, particularly London. Prices ease considerably once you head north or into smaller towns.

Where to go

London is the obvious starting point and worth several days, but don't let it eat your whole trip. It is enormous, dense with museums, parks and neighbourhoods that each feel like separate towns. Many of the major museums charge no admission for their permanent collections, which makes wet afternoons easy to fill.

Beyond the capital, the country opens up. Scotland suits anyone drawn to dramatic landscape: Edinburgh is a compact, walkable city built on hills, and the Highlands and islands offer mountains, lochs and near-empty roads. Wales is smaller, greener and cheaper, good for castles, coastline and hill-walking. The Lake District and the Peak District in northern England draw walkers to fells and stone-walled valleys.

For a sense of England beyond London, cities like Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool and York each have strong character β€” York for its medieval streets and walls, Liverpool and Manchester for music and post-industrial energy. Oxford and Cambridge reward a day each for their college architecture. If you want coastline, Cornwall in the far southwest is beautiful but busy in summer.

When to go

Late spring and early summer, roughly from May into July, tend to be the most reliable stretch, with long daylight hours and gardens at their best. In the far north summer evenings stay light remarkably late. Autumn brings colour and thinner crowds. Winter is dark, with early sunsets and short days, though cities are atmospheric and Christmas markets appear in many of them. Nowhere in Britain has a truly dry season, so plan around rain rather than hoping to avoid it.

What first-timers get wrong

Many people underestimate distances and how slow rural travel can be. Trains are the most comfortable way between cities but fares are far cheaper when tickets are bought well ahead. Traffic drives on the left, which matters both for those hiring a car and for pedestrians crossing the street β€” look right first. Do not try to see London, Scotland and Cornwall in a single short trip; the country is longer than it looks on a map.

Tipping is expected in restaurants but not to Balkan-cafΓ© levels, and a service charge is often already added to the bill. Check before adding more.

Food worth seeking out

British food is better than its old reputation. Seek out a proper Sunday roast in a pub, fish and chips near the coast where the fish is fresh, and a full cooked breakfast at least once. Indian and Pakistani cooking is woven deep into everyday eating β€” a good curry house is a genuinely local experience, not an import. In Scotland try smoked fish and, if you're brave, haggis. Regional baking is worth chasing too: Cornish pasties, Welsh cakes and the ritual of afternoon tea with scones. Real ale in a traditional pub tells you as much about a place as any sight.
