Shymkent sits in southern Kazakhstan, closer in feel to Central Asia than to Almaty or the steppe cities. In January it's genuinely cold, so expect bundled-up markets rather than terrace life. The green bazaar is the heart of things, piled with dried fruit, horse meat and spices, and the city makes a practical base for reaching the ruins of nearby Sayram and Turkestan's tiled mausoleum.
