Shymkent sits in southern Kazakhstan, closer in feel to Central Asia's Silk Road cities than to the steppe further north. December is cold and often grey, so this is an indoor, slow-paced visit: tea houses, the sprawling bazaar stacked with dried fruit and spices, and plates of plov and grilled meat. It's an unpolished, workaday city rather than a postcard one, useful as a base for exploring the wider region.
