Tromsø sits well above the Arctic Circle, so December days barely glimpse the sun, leaving long blue twilights and real darkness by mid-afternoon. That darkness is the point: it's prime season for the northern lights, often visible from the edge of town on clear nights. Expect snow, serious cold, and a compact centre of wooden houses, cosy cafés, and the waterfront cathedral facing the surrounding fjords and mountains.
